The keyboard layout is a little bit different from keyboard layout developed by NIDA. Khmer Unicode is a part of their project, but it has not yet widely utilized or built-in as part internet browsers or software applications. Download the RomanizedKeyboardLayoutForMac.zip and extract the two files 'NepaliRomanized.1.keylayout' and 'NepaliRomanized.1.icns' from the zip file. Quit all running applications. The keyboard is based on the Khmer OS and NiDA keyboard. Unzip the keyboard layout by either simply double clicking the zipped file or by using other software like StuffIt. Safari unzips automatically. The keyboard will either have the extension.keylayout 3. In the Finder, choose Go Computer or type Shift-Command-C. Unicode Keyboard is a smart OS-level typing assistant software that helps you type any accented and Unicode character on US keyboard without having to learn and remember awkward key combinations. First of all, up until recently I had no idea that it is possible to add unicode characters using the keyboard on Mac. Turns out – it is possible! Here is what you need to do.
Go to System Preferences – Keyboard – Input Sources. You’ll see languages you are using on the left (in my case it is British). Click the “+” button at the bottom
Scroll to the very end of the list and you’ll see “Others” there. Select the only value in the list on the right which is “Unicode Hex Input”. Voila!

Now you can enter hex unicode values using your keyboard. Just press the Alt button (keep it pressed) and add the hex unicode number (for example 0041 – which will give you letter A).
Do not forget to check that the shortcut for switching between languages is on. Go to the Shortcuts tab and make sure “Select the previous input source” ticked. Now by pressing command+Space you can switch between your main language and the Unicode input.

This can be very helpful if you are working with Private Use Area characters and have a reference file with the numbers you need. In this case you don’t need to use any additional software to select and copy the glyphs.

How To Install Keyboard Nida Unicode For Mac X
- Press and hold down the Alt key.
- Press the + (plus) key on the numeric keypad.
- Type the hexidecimal unicode value.
- Release the Alt key.
- Driver can be download here: Khmer Unicode NiDA Keyboard for Mac
- To install these keyboards driver, copy the two files to HD/Library/Keyboard Layouts
- Go to System Preferences > International (or Language & Text for Snow Leopard) pane
- Select “Input Sources” tab and desired Khmer Keyboard
- CLOSE System Preferences. You may need to reboot the computer for Keyboard to take effect.
- In both keyboards, if the CAPS lock is depressed, the output will be as a standard English keyboard.
